Each of the three subtests has its own pass line of 220. Here is how a subtest is scored, how many candidates pass, and the rules for a retake.

Three subtests, three pass lines.
Each subtest is scored separately. Its multiple-choice and constructed-response sections are weighted into one total, converted to a scale of 100 to 300, and 220 passes the subtest. You pass the CSET Multiple Subjects once all three subtests are passed.
A subtest has to be passed in a single session: the Commission does not combine the sections of one attempt with those of another. A subtest you have passed stays passed while you retake the others.

In 2024–25, 2,513 of the 3,902 examinees who took all three subtests passed. Since the updated exam began in 2022, 11,770 of 15,889 have passed, counting retakes.

Attempts fell from 5,682 in 2022–23 to 3,902 in 2024–25, and the Commission on Teacher Credentialing expects fewer still: since the 2026–27 budget, California accepts more degree majors and coursework as proof of subject-matter competence for a Multiple Subject credential.
In August 2026 the Commission also planned a review of nationally used subject-matter exams as possible alternatives to the CSET. Until it decides, the CSET Multiple Subjects, its three subtests and its pass line stay as they are.
